A Bright Future Ahead for Exercise Professionals

Monday 23 December 2013

Registered Exercise Professionals have a bright future ahead.

There is a 'perfect storm' brewing, where the exercise professional can be a key player to deliver results.

Society has never been in more need for physical activity and exercise prescription.

Issues such as physical inactivity and the resulting obesity, diabetes and associated health risks have placed a huge strain on the healthcare system. Whilst the solution is a complex and multifaceted one, exercise professionals will be a key player in that solution.

Mental health is another huge issue in our society, and with such an overwhelming amount of evidence demostrating the benefits of exercise, the appropraite 'expert' that will deliver this intervention will be the exercise professional.

The largest challenge in ensuring that the exercise professional is actually used as part of this solution, is to create pathways between the exercise profession and the healthcare professionals.

Government healthcare policy cleary directs that interventions within non clinical settings and within the community are a priority, but the exercise profession has a lot of work to do, to be able to gain the confidence of the healthcare community.

REPs Ireland are working hard to do this, and through building communication and robust Quality Assurance structures around education and training, and registered exercise professionals, we will achieve our goal.

Of course exercise prescription for health & wellness is one area of our wide ranging industry.

Many exercise professionals will enjoy working with clinical populations and liasing with other healthcare professionals, but many more will revel in delivering high quality exercise experiences to the healthier population through mainstraeam fitness and personal training, and at the sports end, in sports preparation and performance.

REPs Ireland will be working hard in 2014 to help create increased recognition and opportunity for registered exercise professionals in the field of fitness and sports.
